Add to My BasketDescription
The 2020–21 National Teacher and Principal Survey (NTPS) is a redesign of the Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS); SASS program data are available since 1987–88 at https://nces.ed.gov/surveys/sass/dataproducts.asp. NTPS https://nces.ed.gov/surveys/ntps/ will replace SASS as one of the key sources of nationally representative data on a range of important education topics including out-of-field teaching, school decision making, professional development, teacher and principal evaluation, and career paths of educators and administrators. The repeated cross-sectional design of NTPS allows tracking of trends on these topics over time. The survey is conducted through a combination of online and paper questionnaires. The sample includes public and private teachers, principals, and schools, and is state representative. The Principal Follow-Up Survey (PFS) is a follow-up survey of public and private elementary and secondary school principals who participated in the NTPS during the previous school year. . The purpose of the PFS is to determine how many principals in the base (NTPS) school year still work as a principal in the same school during the following school year, how many moved to become a principal in another school, and how many left the principalship altogether. Another goal is to measure, from those who left the principalship, what percentage retired or sought work in another occupational field.
Detailed Methodology
About 9,900 public schools and principals, 68,300 public school teachers, 3,000 private schools and principals, and 8,000 private school teachers. The PFS included about 6,500 public school principals and about 1,800 private school principals, for a total sample size of about 8,300 principals. The TFS included about 7,200 current teachers and 3,100 former teachers, for a total of 10,300 teachers.
