Data Collection Notes

The Census Bureau sends the Social Security Administration (SSA) annual Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement (CPS ASEC) updates that consist of all survey respondents SSN (derived from the Person Identification Validation System (PVS)) and individual survey identifiers (i.e., survey IDs). SSA uses the survey IDs to link to public-use data and the SSN to link to their program data. SSA creates research files as output to the linkage to their program data and transfers research files (comprised of SSA program data, SSNs, and survey IDs) to the Census Bureau. After SSA delivers the SSA linked-file to the Census Bureau, the Census Bureau will replace SSNs with PIKs to facilitate matching to survey content and other administrative records.
