The Current Population Survey School Enrollment Supplement is a national survey conducted to obtain information about enrollment in formal schools, full-time and part-time status, and level of education. It is also used to obtain information about enrollment in business, vocational, technical, and correspondence courses. The universe for this survey are household members age 3 and older. It is a proxy response survey that is sponsored by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the United States Census Bureau.
Detailed Methodology
The probability sample selected to represent the universe consists of approximately 50,000 households.
Some data is possibly available from the 1990s.
Self or proxy responses were allowed for this supplement, that is, a single respondent could provide answers for themselves or provide answers for all eligible household members, provided the respondents him/herself was a household member 15 years of age or older. The School Enrollment questions were asked of all persons who were 3 years of age or older, as applicable. The CPS instrument determined who was eligible for the School Enrollment supplement through the use of check items that referred to basic CPS items, including age. Interviewers received a 1-hour self-study that contained exercises on the basic labor force questions, item-by-item instructions for the supplement, supplement exercises and practice interviews.
