NCVS Supplemental Fraud Survey

Description

The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) is an annual survey that collects data on crime against persons 12 years of age or older from a nationally representative, stratified, multistage cluster sample of U.S. households. The Supplemental Fraud Survey (SFS) is a supplement to the NCVS that is designed to measure the prevalence, characteristics, and consequences of being a victim of personal financial fraud. The supplement collects information on the type of fraud committed, how much money was obtained by the offender, how much money was recovered, if the incident was reported to law enforcement or a consumer protection agency, and any negative social, emotional, or financial consequences of the fraud incident. All NCVS respondents 18 years of age or older are eligible to complete the SFS interview, and proxy interviews are not accepted. For the 2017 data collection, interviews were accepted in all languages, however the SFS instrument is only in English. The SFS was administered as a supplement to the NCVS from October through December 2017.
