Description

The Compustat-SSEL Bridge (CSB) was created to facilitate linking Compustat data to the Standard Statistical Establishment Listing. Compustat provides standardized North American and global financial statement and market data for over 80,000 active and inactive publicly traded companies. The bridge was created using a 2008 Compustat file. The Census Bureau does not have Compustat data available to researchers. Researchers must provide the Compustat data as user-provided data.

Use of this data requires Internal Revenue Service (IRS) approval.

Data Collection Notes

The Compustat bridge (CSB) maps a gvkey from Compustat to a firmid from Longitudinal Business Database by year. Matching was performed in several steps which includes EIN, and fuzzy name and address matching. The Compustat bridge file starts in 1976 and ends in 2016. CSB variables include gvkey, firmid and year. Researchers can bring in the Compustat data and use the CSB to attach a firmid to a gvkey. With this firmid they can match compustat data with other census datasets as the LBD (or the new LBDREV), SSEL, LFTTD etc.
