Survey of New Foreign Direct Investment in the United States (Form BE-13)
Add to My BasketDescription
This survey collects information on new foreign direct investment in the United States, including information on the acquisition and establishment of U.S. business enterprises by foreign investors and on the expansion of existing U.S. affiliates of foreign companies to establish new production facilities. This information includes the amount and characteristics of new investments in the United States by foreign investors.
Detailed Methodology
Firm level survey for universe of firms. Restricted access data includes BEA imputations for affiliates below the full form threshold by expanding the submitted claim form on the basis of the movement of the sample data.
The survey was not conducted from 2009 to 2013. Starting in 2014, the survey scope grew to include expansions of foreign owned U.S. businesses. Because expansions were not included in the previous series (ending in 2008), the current series (starting with 2014) is not directly comparable.
These linkage capabilities are for linking specific firms in two different data sets. Additional linkages of more general firm characteristics of (ex. location or industry specific information) can also be made to the extent the information is available in the survey. See "Crosswalks involving BEA microdata" ( https://www.bea.gov/system/files/2023-01/ssrp-bea-crosswalks-microdata.pdf ) for a description of crosswalks available between different BEA data sets and the Census Business Register. While EINs are not included with these surveys, they can be obtained by linking to the corresponding Activities of Multinational Enterprises (AMNE) survey as described in ""Crosswalks involving BEA microdata."
